A 16-inch laptop and one carry-on: the backpacks that fit every airline
Finding a backpack for a 16-inch laptop is easy. Finding one that also fits every airline and holds enough for a week is not. Of the 470 backpacks in our catalog with a 16-inch (or larger) laptop compartment, 244 fit the carry-on limit of all 36 airlines we track. Only 25 of those hold 30 litres or more.
If you travel with a big laptop and one bag, start from those 25.
Why big-laptop backpacks fail airline limits
A 16-inch laptop needs a tall, wide bag, and a padded laptop compartment adds depth. That pushes a lot of laptop backpacks past 20 cm (7.9 in) deep, which is the depth limit at Ryanair, Vueling, Air India and Air Arabia. 66 of the 16-inch backpacks that miss at least one airline would fit all 36 if they were 20 cm deep: their length and width are fine.
Most of the 244 that fit everywhere are commuter-sized. 210 of them hold between 15 and 29 litres, which is right for a laptop, a charger and a day’s things, and short for a week of clothes.

The other 13 are in the catalog: filter by a 16-inch laptop and by your airlines. Our 16-inch laptop guide ranks the wider field. “n/a” means the brand doesn’t describe the opening clearly enough for us to classify it.
Six of the twelve open fully like a suitcase, so you can get the laptop out at security without unpacking. Weight goes from 0.55 kg for the Herschel to 2.1 kg for the ALPAKA: the light bags are simple packs with a sleeve, the heavy ones add a harness, a frame sheet or lots of compartments. And price says nothing about fit. A $70 Herschel and a $415 Tom Bihn fit the same 36 airlines.
17-inch laptops
90 backpacks in our catalog take a 17-inch laptop. 25 fit all 36 airlines, and only two of those hold 30 litres or more: the Cabin Zero Military Backpack 36L and the Doughnut Navigator Light. The rest hold 15 to 28 litres, from 16 different brands.
Check the sleeve size
The laptop size on a bag is the brand’s rating of its sleeve in screen inches. Laptops with the same screen size vary in width and thickness, and a sleeve rated for “up to 16 inches” may be snug for a thick 16-inch gaming laptop. When a brand publishes the sleeve’s inner dimensions, compare them with your laptop’s. For 89 backpacks in our catalog, the brand says there is a laptop sleeve but doesn’t say what size; our bag pages say “sleeve, size not published” rather than guess.
Popular travel packs with a 16-inch sleeve

| Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L | 35 L (45 L expanded) | 5 of 36 |
Depth is the usual reason a good travel pack fails. The Aer Travel Pack 3 is 21.5 cm deep, the Synapse 25 is 23 cm, and the Peak Design is 24 cm in its 35-litre mode.
How we counted
Laptop sizes are the brands’ sleeve ratings. Fit compares the brand’s published dimensions with each airline’s cabin-bag limit, in any orientation. A full bag can be deeper than its listed size, so pack to the listed depth if you fly strict airlines. Limits checked in September and October 2026.
