Packing for a 7 kg cabin limit: the bag is part of the problem

Nine of the 36 airlines we track allow only 7 kg (15.4 lb) in the cabin, and the bag itself counts. On three of them, the 7 kg also has to cover your personal item. An empty backpack of 30 to 35 litres weighs 0.3 kg to 2 kg in our catalog, so the bag you choose decides whether you get 5 kg or nearly 7 kg for your things.

If you fly these airlines, choose the bag by weight first and volume second.

The nine airlines

Airline Cabin-bag limit What the 7 kg covers
Emirates 55 x 38 x 22 cm The cabin bag
Qatar Airways 50 x 37 x 25 cm The cabin bag
Singapore Airlines 115 cm total The cabin bag
Air India 55 x 40 x 20 cm, 115 cm total The cabin bag
IndiGo 55 x 35 x 25 cm, 115 cm total The cabin bag
Air Arabia 55 x 40 x 20 cm The cabin bag, plus 3 kg for a personal item
Qantas 56 x 36 x 23 cm Both items together, in Economy
AirAsia 56 x 36 x 23 cm Both items together
Vietjet 56 x 36 x 23 cm Both items together

These limits come from each airline’s baggage page; business class and some routes allow more. On Qantas, AirAsia and Vietjet, a laptop bag or handbag eats into the same 7 kg.

These nine include the strictest sizes we track, so in our catalog the bags that fit all nine are exactly the bags that fit all 36 airlines. 864 bags in our catalog do, including 623 backpacks.

How much the bag takes

The median backpack that fits all nine weighs 0.85 kg. That leaves 6.15 kg to pack. But the range is wide:

Empty backpack weight Share of the 623 backpacks that fit Left for your things
0.8 kg or less 44% 6.2 kg or more
0.8 to 1.5 kg 49% 5.5 to 6.2 kg
1.5 kg or more 7% 5.5 kg or less

A rolling bag makes it worse. The only roller in our catalog that fits all nine sizes, the Tatonka Travel Roller 40, weighs 2.72 kg, which leaves 4.28 kg. See rolling carry-on or backpack for why rollers rarely make sense here.

Light backpacks that fit all nine airlines

The lightest in each size range, from brands’ published weights:

Backpack Volume Empty weight Laptop US price
Waterfly TransformerX 6.0 UltraLight 25L 25 L 0.27 kg no sleeve size $29.99
Ortlieb Light-Pack 25 L 0.33 kg no sleeve $150
JanSport SuperBreak Plus 26 L 0.40 kg 15” $45
Zpacks Nero Classic 30L 30 L 0.28 kg no sleeve $239
Herschel Classic Backpack XL 30 L 0.55 kg 16” $70
Dakine Educated Backpack 30L 30 L 0.56 kg 16” $75
Gossamer Gear Fast Kumo 36 36 L 0.61 kg no sleeve $190
Cabin Zero Classic Backpack 36L 36 L 0.70 kg 15.6” $100
Hynes Eagle Carry-On Travel Backpack 38L 38 L 0.80 kg 15” $45

Ultralight packs like the Zpacks and the Gossamer Gear come from hiking. They are built to save weight: neither has a laptop sleeve or an organizer, so a laptop or camera needs its own protection. The Cabin Zero and Hynes Eagle bags open like a suitcase and have a laptop sleeve, for about 0.4 kg more.

At the other end, the heaviest 30 to 40 litre backpacks that fit are the ALPAKA Traverse 38L at 2.1 kg and the Think Tank FocusPoint Rolltop 30L at 1.76 kg, a camera bag. Both make sense for what they protect, and both cost you over a kilo of allowance compared with a light pack.

Packing to 7 kg

  1. Weigh the empty bag first. It is the one item you pack on every trip, so every 100 g saved there is 100 g saved every time.
  2. Weigh the packed bag at home. If your bag is weighed at check-in or at the gate, there is no margin above 7 kg.
  3. Wear the heaviest clothes. What you wear isn’t in the bag.
  4. Check the personal-item rule. On Qantas, AirAsia and Vietjet, a separate laptop bag doesn’t buy you extra kilos. On Air Arabia it buys you 3 kg.
  5. Don’t buy volume you can’t fill. At 7 kg, a 40-litre bag will rarely be full. A light 25 to 30 litre pack holds what you can carry.

Our weight vs volume chart shows the lightest backpack for every size, and the lightweight carry-on guide lists backpacks under 1 kg.

How we counted

Weights are brands’ published empty weights; our bag pages show each source. A bag fits all nine airlines when its published dimensions are within each one’s cabin-bag limit, in any orientation. The airline rules were checked on their baggage pages in September and October 2026.
