Which bike bags work without a rack
328 of the 457 bike bags in our catalog need no rack. They sit on the handlebar, inside the frame, on the top tube, under the saddle or on the fork. 167 of them ask nothing else of the bike. The other 161 need one of three things: space inside the frame triangle (83 bags), clearance under the saddle (68) or mounts on the fork (10).
If your bike has no rack and no rack mounts, these are the bags to look at. The bike fit tool filters the catalog by what your bike lacks, and the no-rack guide ranks all of them by litres carried per kilo.
What each position holds
| Position | Bags | Median volume | Largest | Median weight | Median price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Handlebar | 91 | 5 L | 20 L | 0.28 kg | $99.48 |
| Frame | 94 | 3.15 L | 10 L | 0.21 kg | $155 |
| Saddle | 73 | 5 L | 20 L | 0.27 kg | $114 |
| Top tube | 55 | 1 L | 3 L | 0.12 kg | $72.50 |
| Fork | 15 | 5 L | 10 L | 0.27 kg | $73.50 |
Prices are medians of bags with a US list price; only 6 of the 15 fork bags have one.
What each position needs from the bike
Handlebar and top tube bags list no requirement on the bike. The rest depend on the frame or the fork.
Frame bags need room inside the triangle. 83 of 94 list it as a requirement. Not every brand publishes the size you need to check this: 63 of our 94 frame bags have a published height. When the height is missing, the brand’s own size chart is the place to check. The frame bags guide ranks them by volume.
Saddle bags need space between the saddle and the rear wheel. 68 of 73 list seatpost clearance. The 25 saddle bags of 8 litres or more have a median of 13 litres, and the largest, the Arkel Rollpacker Rear 20l, hangs from an aluminium hanger fixed to the seatpost and saddle rails, rated by Arkel for 7 kg. See the bikepacking saddle bags guide.
Fork bags are the most demanding. Of the 15, 10 need fork mounts: 7 bolt on with a cage, 2 strap to the mounts and 1 uses a quick-release bracket. The other 5 strap straight to the fork leg.
How they attach
Straps are the default: 268 of the 328 rack-free bags use them. 42 clip into a quick-release bracket fixed to the bike. 18 bolt onto a cage. If you move bags between bikes, straps need no extra parts; a bracket or cage has to be fitted to each bike.

How far you can go without a rack
Built from the median bag in each spot, a handlebar, frame and saddle bag together hold 13.15 litres and weigh 0.77 kg. Add a top tube bag and a saddle bag of 8 litres or more and you reach 22.15 litres. Taking the largest bag in each of the handlebar, frame, saddle and top tube positions gives 53 litres. These setups are our assumptions, not measured kits; the litres article breaks them down, and the panniers comparison puts them next to a pair of rear panniers.

How we counted
A bag counts as rack-free when it sits on the handlebar, frame, saddle, top tube or fork and lists neither a rear nor a front rack as a requirement. Requirements and mounts are what the brand describes on its product page, checked in October 2026. Volume is the brand’s stated capacity; weight is per bag. 268 of our 457 bike bags have a US list price, and only those count toward prices.
