What a travel backpack costs per litre, and what the extra money buys
The median backpack in our catalog costs $7.31 per litre of stated volume, at the brand’s US list price. The cheapest quarter costs under $5.20 per litre, the most expensive quarter over $10.30. Paying more mostly buys tougher fabric and more structure. It doesn’t buy a lighter bag, a better airline fit, or a much better warranty.
Price per litre is a useful first filter. Read it alongside weight and dimensions, not on its own.
Bigger bags cost less per litre
| Volume | Backpacks with a US price | Median price | Median price per litre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 20 L | 247 | $145 | $9.44 |
| 20 to 29 L | 444 | $170 | $7.16 |
| 30 to 39 L | 215 | $225 | $6.63 |
| 40 L and up | 105 | $249 | $5.47 |
Zips, straps, padding and a laptop sleeve cost about the same on a 20-litre and a 40-litre bag, so small bags look expensive per litre. Compare price per litre within a size range, not across them.
The four price groups
We split the 1,011 backpacks with a US price into four equal groups by price per litre.
| Cheapest quarter | Second | Third | Most expensive quarter | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price per litre | $0.90 to $5.18 | $5.19 to $7.30 | $7.30 to $10.25 | $10.33 to $43.22 |
| Median volume | 28 L | 27 L | 24 L | 20 L |
| Grams per litre | 29 | 37 | 48 | 62 |
| Fit all 36 airlines | 52% | 39% | 55% | 67% |
| Brand offers a lifetime warranty | 46% | 62% | 63% | 60% |
Expensive bags turn out to be heavier, not lighter. The most expensive quarter weighs 62 grams per litre at the median, more than twice the cheapest quarter’s 29. The cheapest bags are mostly simple polyester packs; the expensive ones tend to add padding, structure, pockets and heavier fabric. If low weight is the goal, paying more doesn’t get you there. Ultralight hiking packs are the exception: a Zpacks Nero Classic 30L weighs 0.28 kg and costs $239.
Fabric is where the money goes most visibly. In the cheapest quarter, 68% of bags list polyester and 2% list Cordura. In the most expensive quarter, 26% list ballistic nylon, 19% Cordura and 12% leather. Those fabrics are chosen for abrasion resistance, which matters for a bag that gets dragged through airports for years.
Warranties, on the other hand, barely move. Lifetime warranties are common at every price, from 46% of the cheapest bags to around 60% of the rest. Read the terms, though: most cover manufacturing defects, not wear and tear. Each bag page links to its brand’s warranty.
The airline-fit row is mostly about size: the expensive quarter has smaller bags, and small bags fit more airlines.

None of these is a premium travel pack. They are simple, light bags that happen to have travel-friendly dimensions. For a first trip, or a trip where the bag only has to survive a week, they do the job for a fraction of the price. Our price vs volume chart shows the cheapest bag at every size, and the under $150 guide lists carry-ons by fit.
How we counted
Prices are the brands’ US list prices recorded on each bag page, checked in September and October 2026; sale prices are tracked separately on our sale page. Bags without a US price are left out. Volume is the brand’s stated capacity, which brands measure in different ways; see what the litres on a backpack really tell you. Warranty terms come from each brand’s warranty page.
